The Four Diagram Modes

A reference article demonstrating all four static diagram modes: network, feedback, architecture, and adversarial.

The Editors

Diagrams are a first-class content type on Neo-Cybernetics. They share a unified visual grammar: dark panels embedded in the light page, parchment lines and nodes, Signal Red used only as a semantic marker for control points, adversarial actors, and critical paths.

Mode 01: Societal & Organisational

Force-directed networks. Node size encodes influence. Edge weight encodes relation strength. The red node is the focal or control point: in this case, ICANN as the central coordination body in internet governance.

Mode 01 Societal & Organisational
Influence network in internet governance. Node size = influence. Red = focal coordination body.

Mode 02: Feedback & Cybernetic Loops

Circular arc flows. Solid arcs represent the forward causal chain. Dashed arcs represent the feedback return. Clockwise loops amplify; counter-clockwise loops stabilise. Red marks the control variable: here, temperature as the disturbance state.

Mode 02 Feedback & Cybernetic Loops
Climate feedback loops. Ice-albedo loop (amplifying). Ocean heat buffer (stabilising). Red = temperature as control variable.

Mode 03: Software & Cloud Architecture

Grid-snapped rectangles in vertical tiers. Red outline marks the critical path. Monospace labels throughout. The background grid makes alignment legible without asserting structure where none exists.

Mode 03 Software & Cloud Architecture
Platform architecture. Tiers: client, edge, API, services, data. Red outline = critical path through WAF and API gateway.

Mode 04: Adversarial Behaviour

Two opposing systems separated by a boundary line. The adversarial actor (left) has a dashed red boundary. Attack vectors cross the boundary as red arrows. Compromised nodes in the target system shift to red fill.

Mode 04 Adversarial Behaviour
Supply chain attack. Adversarial actor on left; target system on right. Red arrows = attack vectors crossing the system boundary.

Shared grammar

A reader who learns Mode 01 can read Mode 04 without re-learning. Parchment = neutral or stable. Red = control, threat, or collapse. Solid lines = active or certain. Dashed lines = feedback return, latency, or uncertainty. This consistency is the entire point.
